Just a small tip this morning from “the foot surgeon” Barry Francis about food and how manuka honey is found to be a bacteria buster. Recent studies show that manuka honey can be used to beat antibiotic resistant bacteria including MRSA. Manuka honey’s interaction with pseudomonas aeruginosa, streptococci and MRSA bacteria, which commonly infect wounds, was tested. With the first two the honey hampered the bacteria by attaching itself to the tissues, stalling serious infections. It also blocked the formation of biofilms which protect bacteria from the effects of antibodies and gives them their properties.
The research has also shown that honey can make MRSA more sensitive to antibiotics such as Oxacillin. This would indicate that existing antibiotics may be more effective against drugs resistant infections if used in combination with manuka honey.
