Time to review your footwear

With the onset of spring we are all looking forward to warmer weather and the opportunity to lighten the load on our feet by exposing them more to the air and also increasing our physical activity.  This is then a good time to review our footwear to see whether we can make improvements both in appearance and comfort.  There are a number of products on the market now which certainly offer both.  Included in those are Fitflop sandals as well as a trainer within the same range.  Other sandals would include the Beech, and a more classic shoe the Birkenstock sandal.  This is also a good time to consider giving our feet a makeover.  At the Fyfield Clinic in Enfield, we specialize in high quality pain free chiropody treatment where we deal with painful areas of hard skin, callous, corns and so on, as well as addressing painful nail problems.  Advice regarding footwear and general foot health can be obtained at the time of consultation.  Our chiropodists, Mr Ashley Marks and Mrs Phillippa Armstrong are highly experienced in the delivery of this care.  I look forward to welcoming you.

A recent paper issued at the Arthritis Research UK Primary Care Centre at Keele University (which is coupled by similar research at La Trobe University in Australia) studied data on 2831 people, all of whom were 56 years of age or older.  Analysis revealed that 36% of the participants have bunions with women and older participants tending to be a greater risk than men and younger individuals.  Individuals with bunions tended to have greater pain and physical impairment and a poorer quality of life than those without the condition.  Profession Hylton Menz from La Trobe University in Melbourne revealed “our findings indicate that hallux valgus is a significant and disabling musculo skeletal condition that affects the overall quality of life.  Interventions to correct or slow the progression of the deformity offer patients beneficial outcomes beyond merely localized pain relief.”

Until the next time from The Foot Surgeon Mr Barry Francis.
